5 Netflix Originals We've Loved This Year (And 5 That Totally Disappointed)

8. Disappointing: Outside the Wire

A surprisingly successful hit amongst Netflix viewers, this sci-fi action film was completely panned by critics. Taking place in semi-dystopian future, Outside the Wire initially promised to deliver exhilarating insights into the potential future of warfare.

Set in 2036, the film centers on the involvement of the United States military in a civil war that develops in Ukraine. Outside the Wire specifically investigates the role played by G.U.M.P., a team of android soldiers deployed by the military alongside human officers. Anthony Mackie stars as Captain Leo, a state-of-the-art robotic super-solider pretending to be human.

Also starring Emily Beecham and Damson Idris, the film was released in January to lukewarm reviews. Although many praised the film's innovative plot, exciting set pieces, and strong cast, others suggested that Outside the Wire was ultimately forgettable and mediocre.

While Outside the Wire should have been an intelligent investigation into the (potentially dystopian) future of modern warfare, the film unfortunately fails to deliver on its fascinating premise. With some critics even unfavorably comparing the film to the universally disliked Chappie, Outside the Wire was definitely one of Netflix's weaker releases this year.
