5 Netflix Originals We've Loved This Year (And 5 That Totally Disappointed)
5. Amazing: Pieces of a Woman
Featuring an incredible central performance from Vanessa Kirby, this intimate, heartbreaking look at loss has (rightfully) been considered one of Netflix's best films of the year.
Kirby stars as Martha, an expectant young mother who traumatically loses her baby during childbirth. Eventually, Martha sues her midwife, Eva (Molly Parker), and the film charts the fallout of both Martha's heart wrenching loss and the subsequent court case.
Also starring Shia LaBeouf and Elly Burstyn as Martha's partner and mother respectively, the film was praised upon release for its raw, unflinching, and harrowing portrayal of loss. In particular, many pinpointed Kirby's performance as the film's strongest asset, and the actress was eventually nominated for a Bafta, Academy Award, and Golden Globe.
While some critics did criticize the film's awkward tonal shifts, clumsy metaphors, and reliance on melodramatic plot points, most were unanimous in their praise for the film.
While Pieces of a Woman is certainly not an easy watch, many consider the drama to be one of the best films distributed on the streaming platform. Given the heartachingly impressive performances on display throughout the film, we would have to agree.
