5 Netflix Originals We've Loved This Year (And 5 That Totally Disappointed)
6. Disappointing: The Woman in the Window
Directed by Joe Wright and starring Amy Adams, this claustrophobic chiller was initially scheduled for theatrical release in October 2019. However, the film ultimately faced several delays due to badly-received test screenings, lengthy reshoots, and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Eventually released on Netflix earlier this year, the film was unanimously panned by critics and largely ignored by audiences. Despite its stellar cast (Gary Oldman, Julianne Moore and Anthony Mackie also star), The Woman in the Window failed to deliver on its enticing premise.
Starring Adams as Dr Anna Fox, an agoraphobic recluse, the film centers on Fox's ostensibly paranoid delusions. Based on the 2018 A.J. Finn novel of the same name, The Woman in the Window sees Fox begin to spy on her new neighbours, Alistair and Jane (Oldman, Moore). One night, Fox claims that she has seen an unknown assailant brutally murder Jane - the next day, however, 'Jane' reappears looking entirely different.
Despite this intriguing premise, The Woman in the Window was a complete disappointment with clunky dialogue, bizarre tonal shifts, and contrived plot points. While the last-minute reshoots should have raised a red flag, we remained hopeful that this much-anticipated thriller would entertain audiences. Unfortunately, however, The Woman in the Window has proven itself to be a major flop.
