5 Netflix Originals We've Loved This Year (And 5 That Totally Disappointed)
4. Disappointing: Thunder Force
Starring Octavia Spencer and Melissa McCarthy, this much-ridiculed comedy centers on two childhood friends who later join forces as superheroes.
The film follows the pair as they team up against a group of supervillains, The Miscreants, who are wreaking havoc on Earth. After The Miscreants kill her parents, Emily Stanton (Spencer) tirelessly works to invent a super serum that can transform ordinary people superheroes. Emily hopes that these superheroes will eventually be able to destroy The Miscreants and restore order on Earth.
After Lydia (McCarthy) accidentally injects herself with the serum, Emily decides to undergo the transformation too, and the pair work together as Thunder Force, a new superhero team.
This promising premise is ultimately squandered: unfunny and uneventful in equal measures, Thunder Force is a lackluster attempt to reinvigorate the superhero genre. Likewise it was unanimously panned by critics, many of whom specifically criticized the film's unintelligent plot, uneven tone, and half-hearted attempts at humour.
While Netflix's viewing figures suggest that audiences did tune into to watch this mediocre movie, reactions online seem to indicate that Thunder Force was a flop amongst viewers too.
