It can be said, without controversy, that Disney is the undisputed king of animation. Disney is responsible for seven of the 10 highest-grossing animated films ever and have won 12 of the 19 Best Animated Picture Oscars since the category began in 2001. With few exceptions, Disney has had a monopoly on the medium.

Until last week, one of those exceptions was the Ice Age franchise. Ice Age was introduced to audiences in 2002 to box office success and positive critical reception. Since the original film, there have been have been four sequels, the most recent of which hit theatres in 2016.

Although Ice Age has been one of the most successful franchises animated or otherwise, there are signs the tread may be wearing off the tires. The latest entry, Ice Age: Collision Course, had the lowest box-office gross since the original film and less than half of its immediate predecessor, Ice Age: Continental Drift.

The franchise has just failed to capture the drama and character moments that made the first so memorable. There is a clear financial case to be made for restoring the Ice Age franchise, but the arrival of Toy Story 4 and Frozen 2 later this year are reminders that Disney has better options available.
