5 Newly Acquired Properties That Are A Pefect Fit For Disney (And 5 That Are Not)
8. Perfect: National Geographic
When discussing a merger of this size, we tend to focus on the mega-franchises. Disney stands to inherit more than titles that will bring it huge profits in theaters. We may all receive a refresher course on our planet soon.
With this deal, Disney will have controlling interest in the National Geographic magazine and cable network channel. It may seem like a minor addition, but it could become important fairly soon.
Although Disney has control of some of the most successful franchises, not everything can be Pixar or Star Wars. If the company wants to attract subscribers, they have to offer a wide variety of content. National Geographic has years of programming that could be immediately added to Disney's upcoming streaming service, Disney+.
Studios and streaming services should learn from the stumbles of the recently launched DC Universe. Although the content has and will appeal to DC fans, it has not attracted anyone else. It is difficult to get a sustainable consumer base for a streaming service with such a specific demographic.
This deal is the latest effort from a major studio to stay ahead of Netflix. If you have been on Netflix recently (and let's face it, of course you have), the streaming giant has quite the collection of nature-related programming.
Anything your competitor offers, you would like to have an alternative. National Geographic has name recognition and can fill out programming for Disney+.
