5 Newly Acquired Properties That Are A Pefect Fit For Disney (And 5 That Are Not)

2. Perfect: Avatar

James Cameron had plans to create Avatar well over a decade before the movie's release in 2009. The Titanic Director felt the technology needed to bring Pandora to life just wasn't available in the 90s. It has since become clear that his patience has paid off as Avatar is currently the highest grossing film of all-time.

Cameron's patience when developing his own projects is why we have not gotten a sequel yet. A follow-up is expected in 2020, but such a large gap between films makes it seem that Avatar is being under-utilized. Those feelings will probably not last long.

Now that Disney controls Avatar, look for the franchise to become a far greater priority. Avatar has the kind of imagination and expansive world that is synonymous with the Disney brand. The property seems great not only for film, but Disneyworld attractions as well.

If the sequel is really dropping next year, it could be more important than even its past box office implies. With the release of Avengers: Endgame and Star Wars: Episode IX this year, Disney will be closing major chapters of the company's two biggest film franchises. A slate of Avatar films would give the studio a billion-dollar guarantee while Marvel Studios and Lucas Films lay the ground work for whatever is next.

Of all the titles the Walt Disney Corporation just inherited, none have to make them happier than Avatar.
