5 Oscars 2016 Nominations They Got Right (And 5 They Got Wrong)

3. The Carol Misses

No Best Picture award of Carol. No Best Director nomination for Todd Haynes. Say what? While Haynes is another deserving director overlooked unfairly, it's more forgivable when you consider that it's only a five-horse-race. But when you combine missing out on that with missing out on a Best Picture, you really start to feel a sense of injustice. Even just taking it as an eight-film list, Carol would be worthy of a place. But given that it can stretch to 10, it seems almost inexplicable that the film didn't garner enough votes in order to get it a place on an extended list. It's a beautiful story, stunningly told, and it being shut out of two of the biggest categories is a major shock. On another note, it's also crazy that Rooney Mara is nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Hopefully she will win, because she deserves some recognition for the movie, but she has no business being there in the first place. As great as Cate Blanchett is in Carol (and may be the eponymous character), it's Rooney Mara's Therese who is the true lead of the movie, as well as being it's beating, charming, captivating heart.
