Why It Could Be The Title: Although Episode VII came into cinemas called The Force Awakens, according to Star Wars guru Pablo Hidalgo it was "for the longest time" called Shadow Of The Empire. It may have been dropped there, but it is still a cool name and, with the First Order only a bigger threat going forward, would certainly fit Episode VIII.

Why It Might Not Be: The main reason Shadow Of The Empire wasn't used was because it's incredibly close to something that's already been used in Star Wars. Shadows Of The Empire (plural) was a major multi-media event in 1996, spanning books, comics, video games, toy and more, and while it's been made non-canon like the rest of the EU, it was a major pre-Special Edition event and is remembered fondly by many older fans, creating a needless conflict of interests.

You also don't want to have another middle entry named after the Empire - that may be a rhyme too far.
