Paul W.S Anderson is one of the most hit or miss directors working in Hollywood today. Sure he brought us the brilliantly cheesy Mortal Kombat movie which is probably the best film out there based on a video game but he's also been responsible for half a dozen atrociously bad Resident Evil adaptations, and hes still not done with the butchering. And outside of an equally horrendous Three Musketeers rendition, video game adaptations are his niche. In other words, seeing his name attached to Pompeii is somewhat refreshing. Its also greatly appreciated to finally see him making a film where he doesnt shoehorn in his wife, Milla Jovovich, as an overpowered heroine with ridiculous combat ability. Instead, Pompeii looks to be a visual spectacle that sees Game of Thrones star Kit Harrington as a gladiator racing against a volcano to save his love (Emily Browning) from a corrupt Roman Senator (Kiefer Sutherland). Realistically speaking though, this isnt a movie to see for the plot, but rather exciting 3D-popping special effects and the curiosity of seeing Jon Snow in a Hollywood blockbuster that's not Silent Hill:Revelation. A star could be born here.
