5 Reasons The Power Rangers Movie Is A Big Mistake

5. Lionsgate's Shaky SciFi Track Record

If this movie was about any other science fiction or fantasy franchise (say Stargate or Babylon 5), this point would be the final page of the article. But since we€™re talking about Power Rangers, it€™s only the start. And to be honest, it€™s a pretty bad place. Lionsgate is a studio known for its success with the Twilight, Hunger Games, and Saw franchises. But over the past few years, it€™s also been known to take promising science fiction franchises and make them bomb at the box office, like Dredd and Ender€™s Game. And with the exception of Dredd, the quality of Lionsgate€™s science fiction or fantasy films leaves much to be desired. For Power Rangers to even have a decent chance of box office success (or at the very least, not bombing), Lionsgate needs to go above and beyond its usual efforts to recruit directors, producers, and writers to turn it into something worth respecting. And even if the movie itself is good, there€™s every chance that Lionsgate will screw up the marketing and scheduling of the movie. Lackluster trailers and commercials might kill the movie before it releases, given the generally poor perception of the Power Rangers brand. And putting it out on the wrong date means few people will spend money to see it, especially if it€™s towards the beginning of a college semester, when the target demographic is probably short on money and time for movies. All the signs point to Power Rangers being huge flop potential. Only time will tell if Lionsgate can pull it off.
