5 Reasons The Power Rangers Movie Is A Big Mistake

4. Giant Robots And Monsters Fighting... Again

For whatever reason, there are certain things that western audiences will only take seriously in certain contexts. For example, giant monsters rampaging through cities, like Godzilla, Cloverfield, or King Kong, are fine, but not using anything beyond modern military hardware to fight the monsters. Giant robots are fine as long as they are really aliens from the planet Cybertron that can transform into vehicles, but not if they€™re giant war machines created by humans. One big problem for Power Rangers is that, like Pacific Rim, fighting giant monsters in giant robots seems to be a major turnoff for American audiences. While this isn€™t necessarily going to kill the film, since most Hollywood movies actually make more money outside of the US these days, it does make everything a lot harder for the movie. If Power Rangers bombs outside the US, then it€™ll have to far exceed Pacific Rim€™s lackluster US box office ($101.8 million) to make up for it. If it bombs in the US and does really well overseas, the film might be a success anyway, unless the US gross is utterly horrible. While the giant robots and monsters aren€™t the biggest problems facing the Power Rangers movie, but they€™re the most likely things people will use to denigrate the movie after the brand itself. If this movie is to be anything more than a Pacific Rim style cult film, it€™ll have to win over mainstream audiences too.
