With the retirement of the actor, the retirement of their respective character will logically follow.

Sure, there have been seeds planted for certain characters to take over the mantles of the fallen (i.e. – Bucky taking over as Cap, or Valkyrie taking over for Thor), however, changes like this inevitably lead to viewers constantly comparing the old to the new.

While there is always the option of re-casting characters, or the ever dreaded re-boot, retiring the likes of Iron Man and Captain America is more in line with the grounded reality of the MCU.

This means that everything that the characters have done with their time on screen becomes far more important. Every moment carries weight. There is always going to be a need for a bigger and better threat in the MCU, and if the characters were immortalized (whether by recasting or retconning), events that came before slowly begin to lose significance.

Retiring characters would be more in-line with the realistic treatment of the MCU, and will have a far longer lasting impression in the MCU and with the characters left standing that as the Endgame credits roll.
