5 Rubbish US Remakes Of Great Foreign Movies

3. City of Angels

angels_3 Wim Wenders' original masterpiece Wings of Desire is one of the finest German films ever made, featuring some of the most beautiful imagery ever committed to film. The remake stars Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan and is directed by that guy that made Land of the Lost, which is the cue for depressing sighs all round. Wim Wenders' movie is uniquely romantic and offered something new to cinema (as he so often did), but City of Angels is nothing short of an insult, made all the more blunt by the fact few people outside of cinephiles have seen Wings of Desire. All of the beauty is dispersed of in the Hollywood remake and it's a truly sad state of affairs that a film so glorious and entrancing has been defiled in such a way. City of Angels is low-grade rom-com riddled with clichés. You've seen that movie a hundred times before and it's use of the Wings of Desire premise was genuinely not needed. Nobody will ever give you a solid reason for watching City of Angels - unless of course, you're a Nicolas Cage obsessive and wish to watch every one of his film, which is a truly daunting task.
