2. The Ring
It would have taken nothing short of a miracle for Ringu to be bettered by an American remake. And Gore Verbinski is no miracle worker, in fact, he's a talentless hack who has stolen a living in the film industry. The one positive thing that can be said of The Ring is that it helped launch the career of Naomi Watts who is currently one of the best actresses working in the English language. The original Ringu is indescribably creepy and possesses such a twisted sense of horror proving that nobody does all out horror quite like the Japanese, but all the creepiness and subtle restraint is done away with the second Verbinski got his hands on it. The Ring was reviewed well enough when it came out, but the reality is that it was needless and looked so incredibly inferior to the original. In fact, the only saving grace for The Ring was the fact that The Ring Two was so much worse, even though it was directed by Hideo Nakata, director of Ringu. Verbinski fails to give his film a personality of its own, and it subsequently becomes a vacuum unable to justify its existence.
