When the first X-Men movie was released in 2000, comic book movies were a rarity. No one knew how to take the colourful images from the comics and bring them to life. With this in mind, Bryan Singer chose to give the X-Men a uniform, black aesthetic, eschewing the colourful costumes and masks. It was a smart move, as X-Men characters have some of the most bizarre costumes in comics. Longtime writer of X-Men comics Chris Claremont was quoted a saying "the costumes look good in comics because they are pictures. You put them on real people and you go (shudder)". Having said that, Wolverine needs to appear in his trademark costume for his next movie. A deleted scene from The Wolverine hinted that Mariko presented Logan with a version of his costume as a gift (why this was cut out is not clear). It will definitely provide a visual difference between the different Wolverine films, but he may have extra reason to keep his identity secret after getting close to Mariko and the X-Men. Even if it was just for one scene, seeing Hugh Jackman in any variation of the Wolverine costume from the comics (even the all black X-Force version) would make millions of nerds cry out in joy.
