5 Things That Need To Happen In Kong: Skull Island

How to reintroduce Kong before he goes up against the King of the Monsters.

King Kong is iconic: the original film is arguably the most important movie of all time, thanks to how it revolutionized film-making, and the character's legacy and appeal transcends even the films he appears in. Since his first appearance in 1933, Kong has been remade twice and had one of the greatest monster battles of all time in 1963's King Kong vs Godzilla.

And the good news for fans is that Kong is coming back to theatres in 2017 with Kong: Skull Island. Right now, there isn't much information out about the movie: but we do know that it is taking place in the 1970s and that Kong now shares the same universe as 2014's Godzilla. This opens up new doors that Kong has never been able to go through before.

This new Kong looks to be very different from the classic, with a totally original story, but if this movie is going to be a hit, it needs to have some familiar aspects from past Kong appearances. Familiarity, after all, doesn't always breed contempt...

The fun of Kong isn't just about connecting with a misunderstood ape, it's also about Kong punching monsters in the face. And since Kong is now in the same universe as Godzilla, that means any kind of monster could show up in the movie from a rich universe we've already seen hinted at. The filmmakers need to take advantage and bring in different kinds of monsters now that there aren't any restrictions.

Historically, Skull Island has been home mostly to dinosaurs, giant insects, and of course, giant apes - basically, big versions of things that have existed in our world at some time. Seeing dinosaurs is always amazing, but the movie doesn't need to solely rely on those: this franchise should also introduce some kind of new monster that before would only have been seen in a Godzilla movie.

To be clear, Kong shouldn't be fighting any of the traditional Godzilla monsters, just something large and ridiculous. Skull Island is supposed to be a place where both the characters and audiences should be in awe of and not know what's coming next.
