5 Things That Need To Happen In Kong: Skull Island
2. Understand Kong
Part of the appeal of Kong is that he is a movie monster audiences connect with. They understand his confusion, passion, rage, and curiosity, and he's even seen contemplating life and death after killing a T-Rex. In short, he needs to be a character audiences understand and not just see as a mindless creature.
Kong isn't a traditional giant monster: he has the advantage of having an expressive face, which is something most movie monsters lack. But that's not enough - the film-makers need to make sure that the audience understands Kong, because connection is an incredibly important part of the sell.
We shouldn't cheer Kong on just because rampages through a jungle or city, we should cheer him because we want to see him succeed. He needs to be shown to be empathetic but still be driven by instinct, and while that's a difficult rope to walk, it's a necessary one.
