5 Ways To Have Improved Pacific Rim

5. The Leading Man Or Men?

Pacific Rim Don't get me wrong I'm not saying Charlie Hunnam was bad in the role of Rayleigh, but he wasn't great either. In fact by the end of the film is Rayleigh supposed to be our protagonist or is Idris Elba's character Stacker supposed to be? It seemed that the role shifted during the mid point of the film and we were now supposed to be rooting for Stacker. During Rayleigh's more perilous scenes I have to say I wasn't that concerned about him. I felt more could have been done with the character to make us truly root for him.Yes he had the trauma of what happened to his brother at the start of the film. However, I felt if more dread had been put on that scene or forthcoming scenes we would have cared that little bit more. Maybe it just wasn't the emotional performance we needed from Hunnam, while he certainly got the badass aspect right was that enough? I don't think so. In the end we ended up with two halves of a leading man, one with the brawn and one with the heart.
