5 Ways To Have Improved Pacific Rim

4. No Outstanding Performances

Pacific_Rim_Charlie_Day_4_29_13 Following on from my previous point, I felt no one really stood up and took this film by the monsters horns or whatever they had on them. Yes Idris Elba was his usual reliable self but reliable isn't really good enough. I hear some of you out there saying 'You're not supposed to get great acting in a film like this' Well you've helped me answer my own point by describing it as a 'film like this'. Just because a film is a blockbuster doesn't mean no one can go that extra mile and deliver a really good performance. It could be from the leading or supporting roles that steals the show, sadly we didn't really get either. I've heard some people pointing towards Del Toro regular Ron Perlman as a great performance in this, at the risk of repeating myself he was good not great. He really didn't have enough screen time to have any kind of lasting impact on the film. The character of Mako has also been heavily criticized by some as being redundant and annoying. Some felt her acting was poor and in fact the little girl version of the character actually stole the role right from her. This is again where the emotional impact fell short during her more emotional scenes. We didn't care as much as we should have, we were touched by the little girls trauma not the adult Mako.
