5 Ways To Have Improved Pacific Rim

2. More Of A Twist To The Genre When I heard Del Toro was directing this monster mash epic I was quietly optimistic. I thought that the premise sounded generic, but that Del Toro would bring his own unique spin on the story and give us something we wouldn't expect. In a sense that's exactly what he did. I didn't expect him to be so obvious. While I can appreciate that every film these days doesn't have to have some kind of twist, an element of surprise would have been welcome here. I felt that this film needed to step away from the generic boundaries it was set by similar entries i.e The Transformers series. I was a little worried when the trailers were being released that the whole film would mainly just be Robot's and monster's fighting. While this wasn't the case for the most part I was a little disappointed that nothing truly original was brought in to shake things up a little a bit. Remember this is the project he left The Hobbit for. He must have felt a great desire to do Pacific Rim and leave an already established franchise. He clearly must have felt their was something original and special to be told here. Sadly, while the concept and ideas were somewhat original the execution was not. Maybe I'm being too harsh here though because let's face it it's robots versus monsters. At the end of the day there's not too much more you should expect from a premise like that...or should you?
