1. Fear Of The Kaiju's
I have to say I think this is really where the film missed a trick here. The film could have produced so many frightening moments where we were literally worried for the characters. The only two real moments of semi dread I felt was the flashback sequence involving Mako. We felt sorry for the poor child trying to hide from this horrific monster who has killed her family. The other was the all too brief sequence in which Dr. Newton is hiding from the Kaiju in an underground bunker, along with many other terrified people. The eerie quiet of fear in that room only disturbed by the incoming footsteps of a Kaiju really could have been made more of. I don't know about you but I certainly felt a little tense during that sequence. Where our imagination is the only thing that will ever truly scare us to the core. This was something I felt was sorely lacking in this film. Remember we know Del Toro can do horror very well so it's kind of a puzzle why he chose to simply have the Kaiju mainly interacting with the Jaigers and a few buildings, rather than more scenes involving the fear humans have of these things. Even during the climax of the film where the human's notice a never before seen Level 5 Kaiju is about to come through the portal. A real opportunity to build fear for our remaining heroes, and I was eagerly anticipating this supposed overwhelming threat. However, what played out was just another Kaiju, just bigger, fighting another Jaiger. The whole thing just felt a little rushed for me.
