Spider-Man didn't just fail to make a splash at SDCC, he bellyflopped before the doors to the convention even opened. Early in the week Sony announced that they would be delaying The Amazing Spider-Man 3 all the way to 2018, gave no mention of The Amazing Spider-Man 4 (which was slated for 2018 but has now disappeared off the face of the Earth), and announced a release date for Sinister Six, on November 4th, 2016. We all assumed Sinister Six would arrive before The Amazing Spider-Man 3, especially after TASM 2 scribe Roberto Orci stated that the studio was reshuffling the franchise around and rethinking their long-term strategy, which includes not only more Amazing Spider-Man entries, but villain-centric spin-offs for Venom and Sinister Six. At this point in time, Venom is nowhere to be found, though one can safely assume it'll arrive after TASM 3. Pushing their next Spidey installment four years away isn't the best show of confidence, and while it may be better for the franchise in the long run (time will tell), it meant Spider-Man will have to be absent from SDCC for a while.
