5 Words That Need To Be Dropped From The Geek Lexicon

3. Relatable

Relatable means to respond or connect to somebody or something normally over a shared interest or desire. Relatable in the fan vernacular ties into how one reacts to a certain work or character. For instance, comic book readers who don€™t find Superman relatable because he€™s an alien or perfect or just too altruistic while like John Constantine because he€™s so cool or badass or devil may care because that€™s how they want to see themselves. Everyone is attracted to what they like for various reasons with one of them usually being how they respond to what they see. Again nothing wrong with that but don€™t use relatable so much because a schlub temping on a dead-end office assignment has little on the surface with a super-powered sun god or a chain-smoking, working-class wizard with a Cockney accent. Enjoy a story or character or video game because that€™s what you like but don€™t say your wish fulfillment is the same as the character being someone you can or cannot relate to because just like I€™m not the last survivor of a doomed planet I€™m also not a self-serving rotter who strolls around Hell with Lucifer Morningstar either in a stylish trench coat.

A pop culture geek since the days Christopher Reeve taught the world a man could fly, KISS was in make-up, and V'Ger almost destroyed the earth so I have what I consider a wealth of knowledge and insight on where our culture comes from, where it is now, and where it can go in the future. If you agree or disagree that's what the comments section is for and we can talk about it. Leggo! PS.
