If you're never heard of legendary South Boston gangster Whitey Bulger, you're about to, because Johnny Depp is playing him in a new movie from Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart, Out of the Furnace), with a huge supporting cast including Benedict Cumberbatch (as his brother William), Joel Edgerton (as FBI agent John Connolly), Jesse Plemons, Sienna Miller, Dakota Johnson, Adam Scott, Kevin Bacon, Juno Temple, Corey Stoll and Peter Sarsgaard. With such a fascinating true crime story to draw from, this one would have to go startlingly wrong not to be one of the year's most impressive crime dramas, and with a cast this illustrious, perhaps Mr. Oscar could even come a-calling?
