50 Comic Book Movies That Almost Got Made

24. J.J. Abrams€™ Superman: Flyby

Long before Zack Snyder€™s Man Of Steel began gearing up for release - and even before Bryan Singer€™s 2006 film Superman Returns €“ Star Trek Into Darkness director J.J. Abrams had an idea €“ and even a script €“ for a movie about the origins of Clark Kent, which was tentatively titled Superman: Flyby. Abrams€™ script saw Superman sent to Earth as a baby like every other version of the character, but in this one Krypton was never destroyed. Instead, the planet is in the midst of a civil war that eventually reaches Earth, forcing Superman to do battle with his own people in order to save his adopted home. The screenplay was famously torn apart by (the then-highly influential) Ain€™t It Cool News in a review that, according to urban myth, was pretty much single-handedly responsible for the project crashing and burning.
