50 Greatest Horror Movies Of The 21st Century

1. Shaun Of The Dead

Plot: A loser salesman (Simon Pegg) tries to help his drug dealer best friend (Nick Frost), his ex-girlfriend (Kate Ashfield), his mother (Penelope Wilton) and some others he's less fond of try to survive a sudden zombie outbreak by holing up in his local pub.

And finally, the greatest horror film of the 21st century? It's arguably Shaun of the Dead, Edgar Wright's legendary 2004 horror comedy.

Alright, this might seem like a bit of an odd choice for number one over some of the other films on this list, especially the ones which are more traditional horror, but here's the thing: Shaun of the Dead is a complete masterpiece.

It's a gut-burstingly hilarious comedy. It's a wickedly tense zombie thriller filled with beautifully mounted set-pieces and gross-out gore. It's a genuinely touching underdog story with satisfying character growth all the way through. It's visually flawless, beautifully acted, gloriously scripted and filled with unforgettable one-liners, compelling characters and ingenious needle-drops (killing a zombie to 'Don't Stop Me Now', anyone?).

Shaun of the Dead is a blissful piece of cinema that packs in more heart, thrills, laughs and scares into a tight 90-minute run-time than many horror films could in three hours. It's a true gem of a movie and of course, everyone will have different picks for the best horror film of the 21st century but for your writer? This is it.
