50 Infuriating Horror Movie Characters We All Secretly Wanted To Die
49. Shaun Of The Dead - David
Alongside being a zombie flick, Edgar Wright's masterpiece is also a very British romantic comedy about a loser underdog, that being Shaun (Simon Pegg), getting his act together and winning his girlfriend back after she dumps him. Such stories often benefit from having a rival to the lead, one who constantly antagonizes and undermines them. In Shaun of the Dead, that role is taken by David (Dylan Moran), the insufferable flatmate of Shaun's ex-girlfriend Liz.
David, who secretly loves Liz, is madly jealous of Shaun and undermines him at any and every opportunity with one snarky put-down after another. Irish comedian Dylan Moran did a bang-up job of making this guy as annoying as possible, and excellently captured an uppity wanker who's allowed petty jealously to overwhelm him.
When Shaun and Liz break up, Shaun exasperatedly exclaims, "Get fu**ed, four eyes!" at David, and one gets the sense he'd been wanting to say that for a long, long time. Interestingly, Shaun's stepfather Philip (Bill Nighy) looks set to be an antagonistic figure, yet he ultimately gets a touching redemption scene. David, on the other hand, never changes.
Well, there is a moment where he's seemingly about to apologize to Shaun, but he's then dismembered by the zombies in the movie's goriest scene - it's telling that was given to David.
Would he ever have changed? Probably not, to be honest.
