20. Star Trek Beyond

With JJ Abrams too busy with that other Star thing to continue his tenure as the new head of Trek, the reigns for the latest step in the franchise Gene Roddenberry built fell at the unexpected feet of Fast & Furious veteran Justin Lin. To say fans weren't exactly falling over themselves in celebration is an understatement: and their concerns over the reinvention of the sci-fi into more pure action is unavoidable.

Having finally got their "ongoing mission" off to a start, the crew of the USS Enterprise end up marooned on a distant new planet when the ship is destroyed by a fearsome new foe led by Idris Elba. The trailer - predictably - promises lots of action (and, ludicrously a motocross stunt), but there's enough goodwill after Into Darkness to make this still a solid banker.

Let's just hope there isn't too much of a disconnect with the source: hopefully the influence of bona-fide nerd Simon Pegg (who wrote the script) will preserve the original vision somewhat.
