50 Most Anticipated Movies Of 2017 - Ranked
26. Ghost In The Shell
It wouldn't be Hollywood without a good few white-washing controversies, and the loudest criticism of the 2017 bunch seems to be aimed at the live action adaptation of Ghost In The Shell. In all honesty, it's not at all surprising that Paramount went with a star as big as Scarlett Johansson, but that explanation won't appease the critics, who appear to have ignored the Japanese reaction to the casting (a shrug and the justification that self-identity is more important than external aesthetics generally).
And at least she's a good talent, as Paramount have been quick to insist since the controversy appeared.
Putting all of that aside, the original is iconic for a very good reason: the story is the stuff of sci-fi dreams, having already ascended into anime legendary status. Whether a live action adaptation can do justice to the artistic vision of the anime remains to be seen, but we can at the very least expect a stunning visual experience.
