Luc Besson may not be to everyone's taste, but he knows how to spin a good yarn, and in The Fifth Element he has incredible sci-fi precedent with the kind of artistic, imaginative vision that simply hasn't been seen since it came out. That might change this year with the release of genetic sibling Valerian, which looks both as visually astounding and as utterly bonkers as its forebear.

Having mostly flown under the radar on announcement, Valerian was shot into the collective cinematic consciousness with a brilliant first trailer that suggests notes of Avatar, the Fifth Element and an intangible sci-fi spirit the Wachowskis seem to have been singularly unable to deliver on for some years. It looks bold and brash and beautifully odd, and while Dane DeHaan and Carla Delevingne aren't quite as conventionally charming as you might like, they probably do suit Besson's image.

It needs to do well with an astronomical budget that has blown France's previous record holder (Asterix OBVIOUSLY) out of the water, but remarkably, it looks very promising.
