After Thor: The Dark World was such a disappointing bust, Marvel could have been forgiven for just quietly turning Thor into an Avengers movie only participant. It wouldn't have cost anything to the character after all, apart - perhaps - from further opportunity to see Loki.

But Marvel are as brave as they are stubborn, and thankfully we've now got a third Thor to look forward to with a hell of a story, massive stakes and a simply stunning cast. As if adding the Hulk and Doctor Strange weren't enough, Ragnarok also has Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Cate Blanchett and Karl Urban all incoming as new characters.

And of course there's the much rumoured, hotly desired opportunity to see at least some of the Planet Hulk storyline on screen, despite how unlikely that looked even a year ago.

Perhaps more exciting than all of that though is the hiring of Taika Waititi as director: he's hilarious and brilliant with characters, and there's clearly no way he will allow the film to wade into the po-faced glumness of The Dark World again.
