50 Most Anticipated Movies Of 2017 - Ranked

Say what you want about the Cars franchise being John Lasseter's personal perversion given the big budget, big screen treatment, but it's still one of Disney's biggest money-spinners. In merch terms alone, the Lightning McQueen-led series pulls in an astonishing haul, so it was always inevitable that another movie would come, even after the first sequel was widely heralded as the worst Pixar film ever.

Cars 2 might have been poor, but it's easy to forget that the Doc Hollywood-riffing first film was legitimately great, and the darker feel of the third movie's first teaser suggests we're moving away from the Mater Show goofiness that seemed to dominate its predecessor.

This could be the film that sees Cars grow up (though a fully gritty redo would be a mistake in merch terms), and there is something to be said for a Toy Story 3-like examination of redundancy with a post-heroic age edge that riffs on Days Of Thunder.
