The idea of a Sicario sequel would have been surprising to anyone watching the explosive original, but it's not at all unwelcome, given how good the original was.

Denis Villeneuve might not have come back, but key talent Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro are back and the Blade Runner 2049 helmer has handed over the reins to Gomorrah director Stefano Sollima. He knows noir crime having made that show and Italian neo-noir mafia flick Suburra, so the sequel is in good hands.

The story will take up with Brolin's CIA operative teaming back up with Del Toro's hardcore former agent seeking to end the drug cartels' smuggling of terrorists in the USA. Expect it to be darker, more extreme and harder to take than Sicario, but expect it to be good too, crucially.
