19. Pokemon: Detective Pikachu

The idea of a video game movie being this highly anticipated might be confusing for some, given how poor most movies in that genre tend to be, but there's so much enthusiasm among video game fans to see one of their beloved franchises to work that it's inevitable that we get a little swept up.

Detective Pikachu was always a strange choice for movie adaptation, but the silliness and the potential for Deadpool/Happy style meta-comedy means it has something no other video game movie adaptation has had before. It also has Ryan Reynolds voicing the titular furball, which helps, given his popularity and the first trailer did look genuinely great.

Expecting too much of it might be dangerous, but they've nailed the effects work on the live action Pokemon and the chemistry between Reynolds and Justice Smith is immediately irresistible.
