50 Most Anticipated Movies Of 2022

30. Babylon

Whiplash Damien Chazelle
Sony

Damien Chazelle (Whiplash, La La Land, First Man) looks to continue his streak of technically meticulous, character-driven dramas with Babylon, which is set in the golden age of Hollywood.

Brad Pitt will play a character based on silent era actor-director John Gilbert, while Margot Robbie will portray the original "It girl" Clara Bow as she transitions from silent films to talkies.

The cast for this thing is mind-bogglingly stacked, including Katherine Waterston, Max Minghella, Flea, Samara Weaving, Lukas Haas, Eric Roberts, Olivia Wilde, Spike Jonze, Tobey Maguire, Jean Smart, and Jeff Garlin.

Needless to say this is going to be a fierce awards contender next year, short of a disaster.

Babylon releases on December 25.

29. The Whale

The Wrestler Darren Aronofsky
Fox Searchlight

Darren Aronofsky returns with another typically singular dramatic offering, this time adapted from Samuel D. Hunter's play of the same name, with Hunter translating his own material to the big screen.

Brendan Fraser stars as Charlie, a 600-pound middle-aged man who attempts to reconnect with his estranged 17-year-old daughter (Sadie Sink). Hong Chau, Samantha Morton, and Ty Simpkins co-star.

It's exciting to see Aronofsky, as daring and provocative as any filmmaker, team with A24 for this one, and it'll hopefully continue the career resurgence of Fraser, who has found firm footing as a dramatic character actor in recent years, and will be donning comprehensive prosthetics for the role.

The Whale releases later this year.
