50 Most Anticipated Movies Of 2022
20. Crimes Of The Future
Some eight years after the release of his last film Maps to the Stars, David Cronenberg finally returns with Crimes of the Future, which despite lifting its title from his own 1970 feature, is not a remake as was originally reported.
Little is known so far, but the plot reportedly revolves around human evolution in a not-so-distant future, where humankind adapts to "synthetic surroundings." Right.
The cast includes Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux, Kristen Stewart, and Scott Speedman, and the film wrapped speedily over five weeks last summer, so there's a good chance it premieres at a film festival in the first half of the year (almost certainly Cannes).
Crimes of the Future releases later this year.
19. Pinocchio
Though we've certainly had our fair share of Pinocchio movies over the years - including an incoming live-action one from Robert Zemeckis - it's tough not to be enormously excited by this darker stop-motion animation take from the mind of Guillermo del Toro and co-produced by The Jim Henson Company.
Shifting the setting to 1930s Fascist Italy, this is primed to be a Pinocchio adaptation like no other, with a fantastic cast to boot: Ewan McGregor (as the Talking Cricket), David Bradley (Master Geppetto), Ron Perlman, Tilda Swinton, Christoph Waltz, Cate Blanchett, Tim Blake Nelson, Finn Wolfhard, John Turturro, and Burn Gorman.
The concept art released so far looks absolutely fantastic, and there's no reason at all to doubt del Toro here as he makes his animated directing debut.
Pinocchio releases on Netflix in the last quarter of the year.
