50 Most Anticipated Movies Of 2023
16. MaXXXine
Even just a year ago, most of the world hadn't heard of Ti West's X franchise, and 12 months later, he's deep in production on the third entry into the series.
Low-budget slasher X made quite the impact with horror fans and turned a solid profit at the box office last year, before West revealed that he secretly shot a prequel film, Pearl, back-to-back with it in 2021.
And shortly after Pearl released earlier this year, West confirmed that a third film, MaXXXine, will serve as a direct sequel to X and reunite audiences with Maxine Minx (Mia Goth) as she heads to Hollywood in 1985, some six years after the events of the first film.
Production reportedly began quietly back in October, and given West's reputation for producing stellar results in a quick, cheap timeframe, there's no reason why this won't be ready before year's end.
MaXXXine releases sometime in 2023.
15. Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse wasn't just a great superhero movie - it was one of the best animated films of the last decade, and rightly won the Best Animated Feature Oscar.
Expectations are sky-high, then, for long-awaited sequel Across the Spider-Verse, in which Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) continue their multiverse-faring adventures while coming face-to-face with the villainous Spot (Jason Schwartzman), a man whose body is covered with interdimensional portals.
Simply put, this looks like a blindingly consistent sequel set to serve up more dimension-hopping insanity alongside some of the most ambitious visuals of any superhero or animated film ever.
The multiverse may start feeling like a tired concept eventually, but at least in this case it's clearly being handled with thought and imagination.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse releases on June 2.
