50 Most Anticipated Movies Of 2023
12. Megalopolis
The King is back.
At 83 years of age, legendary Godfather and Apocalypse Now filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola has laid down $120 million of his own money - funded by selling off a portion of his lucrative winery - to produce a passion project he's been working on for 40 years.
Megalopolis is an epic sci-fi drama which stars Adam Driver as an ambitious architect who wishes to rebuild New York City as a utopia following a catastrophe.
Given the likelihood that this will be Coppola's final film, he has amassed an incredibly enviable ensemble cast, with Driver joined by Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Jason Schwartzman, Shia LaBeouf, Talia Shire, James Remar, Dustin Hoffman, and Giancarlo Esposito.
Coppola will be using the Volume technology recently utilised on The Mandalorian and The Batman to produce more tactile effects-based elements, in what's easily one of the most exciting things in Hollywood right now: an auteur-driven blockbuster.
Even if it ends up being quite terrible, it'll be cathartic to see Coppola finally bring his long-gestating vision to fruition.
Megalopolis (probably) releases sometime in 2023.
11. The Marvels
The Captain Marvel sequel will team Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) with Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) for a film that's been characterised as an homage to classic body swap comedies, as the two heroes begin swapping bodies every time they use their powers.
Nia DaCosta (Candyman) will direct a script from WandaVision writer Megan McDonnell, and though much remains up in the air, we know that Samuel L. Jackson will return as Nick Fury and Zawe Ashton will play the villain.
A body swap parody sounds like such a fun conceit for an MCU film, and should ensure this has quite a different flavour from its predecessor - not to forget the contemporary setting this time around.
The Marvels releases on July 28.
