50 Movies Where Evil Won
29. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith
Plot: The final chapter of George Lucas' Star Wars Prequel Trilogy tells the story of Anakin Skywalker's (Hayden Christensen) final transformation into Darth Vader, the fall of the Jedi Order, and the rise of the Galactic Empire.
Even after Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Revenge of the Sith is still the darkest, angriest Star Wars movie of them all, and that's how it was always going to be.
In the years leading up to Episode III, George Lucas described it as a tragedy, and that description could hardly be more apt. It's a story where a hero succumbs to his fatal flaws and falls from grace, turning into a monster and unintentionally killing the woman he loves. It is also the story of the Jedi Order's folly and how their arrogance and hubris allow Palpatine/Darth Sidious (Ian McDiarmid) to destroy them all.
Once again, it's a tragedy, albeit not necessarily the most logical one. Prequel stans can argue all they like, but Anakin becoming a complete psycho and turning on all of the Jedi after two conversations with Palpatine will never, ever make sense, and the Jedi were so stupid and obtuse that, quite frankly, they brought Order 66 on themselves.
Nevertheless, Revenge of the Sith is still a powerful piece of storytelling despite these plot holes, and it'll leave most viewers feeling melancholy in a way none of the other Star Wars films do.
