Lets get one thing out of the way: Superman Returns is the Man of Tomorrows dullest cinematic outing. It might not be the worst, but in the name of Jor-El is it a snoozefest. That said, director Bryan Singer had a roadmap in mind for the characters cinematic future that may have taken him along more exciting avenues, had the filmmaker been given the chance to make a sequel. And those who were left craving a film where Supes actually throws a punch wouldnt have been left disappointed. Singer had plans to follow Returns with a movie that shares the name of Zack Snyders first Superman offering, Man of Steel, and it would have seen the Last Son of Krypton face off against alien terror. Now thats more like it. Apparently, the plan was to have Darkseid - an all-powerful alien warlord - feature as the villain opposite Brandon Rouths Superman in the next instalment, a film that Singer claims would have been pretty world-destroying. For better or worse, Warner decided that Returns wasnt the box office knockout they were after and handed the directorial reins and reboot switch to Snyder for Man of Steel, which ended up being pretty world-destroying - or at least city-destroying - itself.
