Christopher Reeve will always be Superman to those who grew up during that generation, but its fair to say that his record in the red cape and boots is hit and miss at best. Superman III was bad, Superman IV was worse, but Reeve might have gotten the chance to redeem himself with a fifth film has tragedy not befallen him. At one stage, a script for Superman V did the rounds at Cannons Films. It had Reeve reprise his role as the eponymous hero to thwart the nefarious plans of Brainiac and liberate the city of Kandor, a lost relic of Krypton that the alien villain has shrunk down and bottled. Interestingly, the screenplay included death and resurrection for Superman, a short time before the Death of Superman comic book arc had been published. It seems that filmmakers have obsessed over the idea of killing off the Man of Steel on screen. This idea died a death when the screen rights to Superman changed hands between Ilya and Alexander Salkind and Warner Bros, who handed the property to producer Jon Peters and made inroads towards adapting Death of Superman for cinema.
