6 Comedy Movies That Actually Turned Out To Be Super Depressing

4. Young Adult (2011)

Youngadult Check this out: Charlize Theron is a hot young professional who returns to her high school town (in which she used to be queen bee of cheerleaders etc.) to win back an old flame. Sounds fun, right? It is not fun. There's nothing fun about it. The whole film revolves around the fact that Charlize Theron's character is undeniably sad and pretty much broken inside, with her attitude and wild swings in behaviour pointing to a clear bipolar disorder. The story doesn't even hide from that - in fact, it revels in it, showing frequent dimly-lit scenes of the protagonist's personal reflection, in which you can see that she's clearly wondering about the point in being alive. She's desperate, alone, and defeated. That's funny, right? Not really, no. In itself, Young Adult isn't a bad film at all... just please don't promise us Anchorman and then deliver something like The Pianist.
