4. Secret Invasion
Before we get going on why Secret Invasion would make a brilliant film I would just like to point out that, yes, I know it's technically not possible to adapt at the moment since the Skrulls fall within Fox's ownership of the Fantastic Four rights. That being said, Fox has recently, and very quietly, dropped the sequel to its latest stab at the Fantastic Four from its production slate after the first one was clobbered by critics, fans and the moviegoing public alike, so it's not totally impossible that the FF or related properties could be soon returning to Marvel. If Marvel do reclaim the FF then the first thing it should do (after giving us a proper version of Dr Doom) is to initiate the Secret Invasion. The bare bones of the story is that that the alien Skrulls, a race of warmongering shapeshifters and the sworn enemies of the Kree, have had sleeper agents on Earth for years with some embedded in deep cover as trusted allies and members of the superhero community. It's likely that any cinematic version of the Secret Invasion would start events from a more neutral position, with the Skrulls (or a substitute race if necessary) being seen to land on Earth and assimilate into human life. The idea of one or more of the main MCU cast being replaced with a malevolent alien foe would let Marvel Studios fulfil their mandate of exploring new genres, lending the Secret Invasion the air of paranoia and menace seen in the likes of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. That paranoia would also feed well from whatever lingering animosity Civil War leaves behind, reopening old wounds that will only just have started healing
