2. Emanuelle And The Last Cannibals (1977)
While working undercover in a mental hospital, Emanuelle learns of the possible existence of cannibals. She teams up with a group of people to go to Amazonia and investigate. There is a lot of sex and voyeuristic masturbation scenes - everyone is basically shagging everyone else and everyone is being a Peeping Tom watching them do it! Then they finally get out of the sack with one another and meet the cannibals where there is castration and flesh munching aplenty. It is up to our heroine Emanuelle to have the smarts as to how to get onto the good side of the tribe and get away. Naturally this includes full frontal nudity. A rather opportunistic piece of sleaze from D'Amato - borrowing all the motifs of the cannibal genre and mixing it with hot and heavy sex scenes. Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals may provoke a few mild thrills with the sex scenes, but the gore and horror element is a letdown. D'Amato was obsessed with mixing horror and sex and this is a penchant he would take to extreme degrees in Erotic Nights of the Living Dead and Porno Holocaust. I am maybe being a bit harsh about Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals. It was an enjoyable romp and all the voyeurism makes it extremely kinky. D'Amato never really made a 'dreadful' film. He was a competent director and as I keep chiming in, cinematography was his forte. As a director he wanted to titillate the viewer and thus do anything to get bums on cinema seats. Cannibals and sex were his choice instruments of provocative sleaze in this film and it has entertained many many people over the years.
