6 Doctor Who Movies That Almost Happened

1. Sony's Modern Movie

In 2015, the Sony e-mail leaks revealed conversations with BBC's head of drama Danny Cohen, which seemed to promise a Who movie "within 8 years".

This actually conflicted with Steven Moffat's comments that same year, who seemingly had no knowledge of these plans and outright shot down the prospect of a film, saying (to EW) "I don't think there is one." He also stressed that nobody has an answer on how exactly to make it, but the BBC clearly has it as part of their agenda.

Now that Moffat is out of the picture and a new era on the horizon, it'll be very interesting to see how these apparent plans turn out, even if we have to wait until the early 2020s.

The TV show is no doubt enough to hold us over, but the prospect of seeing Who on a bigger scale is certainly something to gush about. While it has been on the cards throughout the decades, 50 years and counting, we're still unfortunately only baby-stepping towards a big-budget, faithful and epic Doctor Who film.

A fan can always dream though...
