6 Tantalising Movies Christopher Nolan Could Make Next

1. Waterland

Don't worry. This one bears no relation to that terrible Kevin Costner film.

You might wonder what inspired Christopher Nolan's love for non-linear storytelling and bending narratives, recurrent themes across his body of work.

Well, they were at least in part inspired by Graham Swift's novel Waterland, a book he often plugs when quizzed about his influences.

He told A.V. Club waaaaay back in 2002...

"The one example I like to use is a book by Graham Swift called Waterland, which is a fantastic book I read when I was a kid. Swift constructs the story in a nonlinear fashion that's entirely clear and consistent and interesting, so I've certainly grown up feeling that there's no reason you shouldn't be able to present the cinematic narrative in whatever form is most interesting."

Waterland, which weaves a fragmented narrative around the themes of nature and importance of history, was adapted as a film in 1992 by Stephen Gyllenhaal, with its setting moved from The Fens in East Anglia to Pittsburgh.

Given his obvious passion for the source material, a more faithful adaptation which retains the original setting could be a real labour of love for Nolan.
