A Poltergeist reboot was never going to compete with Star Wars, Jurassic Park or James Bond, but it turned out to be one of 2015's highest-grossing horror films. In the US, Roy Lee & Sam Ramie's offering took $47m, nearly twice as much as the Oscar-nominated Ex Machina, and only $5m less than the third instalment in the ever-creepy Insidious franchise. True, the benchmark for horror has moved on apace since Steven Spielberg's classic from 1982, but the film has been brought up to date just enough that fans of the original will feel comforted by the similarities, while anyone who has grown up with broadband in their homes as standard will feel like they're watching a terrifying original. It's scary, it's better than Tomorrowland and it's got Sam Rockwell in it, too. Poltergeist (2015) arrives on Netflix in spooktacular fashion on January 26th.
