6 Things That Have Well And Truly Taken Surprise Out Of Cinema

2. Foyer Posters and Stands

Just looking at the cinema posters in the foyer can ruin things. Most of the James Bond posters pre-2000 were effectively hand-drawn versions of the best bits of the film: you could probably have torn them up and made a flick-book out of it yourself, whilst humming John Barry. Nowadays most posters lead with a money shot or two €“ a famous building blowing up in sci-fi, a series of haggered men with an animal in a bawdy comedy, that kind of thing. Yes, they are supposed to grab your attention, but it crosses a line when you spend most of the time when you're watching the film wondering when they€™ll get to the bit where they blow up Birmingham€™s Bullring shopping centre or how the cow will end up wearing a fez. Tip to avoid spoilers: Run through the foyer, looking only ahead and don€™t stop for anything.

I'm a Westcountry exile now living in Yorkshire with lovely wife and cats (also lovely). I'm a big fan of films, robots, timetravel, and films about timetravelling robots, as well as lots of other action, sci-fi and comedy. I'm currently trying to write a sitcom that doesn't involve robots, and I also blog nonsense on timolsky.blogspot.com. Thanks for taking the time to read my stuff, and feel free to comment.
