6 Things To Watch After The Lighthouse

1. The Witch (2015)

Another period horror where animals cannot be trusted, Robert Eggers' directorial debut convinced Dafoe and Pattinson to join his project. If you liked The Lighthouse then it makes perfect sense to seek out The Witch immediately.

Set in 17th-century New England, it follows a family that has been banished from their colony's settlement over a religious dispute. Forced to take up a home and farm near a secluded forest, things take a spooky turn when the family's new-born baby is snatched from under the nose of protagonist Thomasin (Anya Taylor-Joy).

A darker movie than The Lighthouse, The Witch is a folk horror that was the culmination of a childhood dream for Eggers. His fascination with witches and frequent childhood visits to an actual plantation led to the development of a critical hit that launched his career. Full of interesting imagery and lore, The Witch features at least one scene that will haunt your dreams. A swift change of tone, it involves the grisly making of a magic potion.

We hope that Eggers continues to depict strange and terrifying animals in his future projects. Although, as ominous as the one-eyed gull was, the threat he carries pales in comparison to the fearsome goat known as Black Phillip.
